Danny Murphy urges Tottenham to stay away from £165k-a-week striker

Considering how flat things felt at White Hart Lane once Antonio Conte had jumped ship, Ange Postecoglou has done an amazing job of getting Tottenham back into the Premier League’s top five whilst playing some of the best football seen for years.

The Australian is clearly a no-nonsense operator who knows what he wants and doesn’t appear to deal in small talk and ‘what ifs.’

His singular vision to make Spurs successful looks to have had a galvanising effect on both the players and the supporters.

The latter would be forgiven for thinking that getting the old Celtic boss in was just another Daniel Levy move to save a bit of money, however, it’s proved to be a masterstroke.

Even before half a dozen games had been played in the 2023/24 season, it was clear that the supporters recognised that they had the right man for the job.

With only a handful of games to go there’s a very real possibility that Tottenham will be a Champions League team next season, and that could be part of the reason why his decisions don’t appear to have been questioned.

Timo Werner in action for Tottenham

There have been a number of standout exponents for the club during Postecoglou’s opening few months but Timo Werner hasn’t really been one of them.

It’s true that the Chelsea flop has shown flashes of his talent but it’s a stretch to say that he’s been great. Maybe a few eyebrows were even raised when the manager wanted him in, arguably to do a job.

In any event, The Boy Hotspur quote Danny Murphy whilst speaking on Match of the Day about the £165,000 per week (Capology) man, and it seems that the former professional thinks Spurs should steer well clear.

Danny Murphy thinks Tottenham should steer clear of Werner

“I think there is better out there depending on what you’ve got to spend and what you want to prioritise,” he said.

“I think it was a great gap filler and he’s done OK. But you want more goals from your widemen. He doesn’t score enough for me.”
