Exclusive: Graham Potter one of four candidates to manage elite European club, says expert

Former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter has been on Ajax’s shortlist of potential manager targets, according to transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano.

Potter has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea last season, but the English tactician has long been very highly regarded in the game, having done some impressive work during his time in charge of Brighton in particular.

Potter could be a fine option for Ajax in this difficult period for them, and it seems he has been considered by the Dutch giants, even if Romano isn’t aware of any concrete negotiations taking place just yet.

It has been widely reported that the ex-Blues boss actually turned down the Ajax job, but Romano says he’s not currently aware of any kind of rejection taking place as he’s not sure there have been formal talks or offers made.

Potter Ajax reports: Fabrizio Romano responds

Speaking to CaughtOffside about to the Potter to Ajax stories, Romano had this to say in today’s edition of his exclusive Daily Briefing column: “I’m aware there have been reports of Graham Potter turning down an approach to become Ajax manager, but this is not something I’m aware of.

Graham Potter struggled in his stint as Chelsea manager

“My understanding is that Potter has been on Ajax’s shortlist for weeks, alongside three more candidates. But at the moment he’s not in concrete talks with Ajax because they still have problems to resolve off the pitch, so it’s something very quiet.”

It would be interesting to see Potter back in management soon as he surely has what it takes to forge a fine career at the highest level, even if things didn’t go to plan for him during his short stint at Stamford Bridge, where his successor, Mauricio Pochettino, is now also struggling, despite further big-money signings being delivered to the club during his reign.
