Gordan Strachan’s men were not expected to achieve anything less than a comprehensive defeat in Germany as his side took on the 2014 World Cup winners in Dortmund but the Scotland national team did themselves proud with a strong showing.

Thomas Muller, who netted five goal in Brazil this summer, put Germany in the lead with a superbly placed header on 18 minutes, finding room just beyond David Marshall’s reach.

Scotland dug in and didn’t collapse and had plenty of chances to pull themselves back into the game with Everton’s Steven Naismith missing a fair few decent chances.

It was Watford winger Ikechi Anya who did level things though mid-way through the second half, calmly slotting home past Manuel Neuer to send the travelling Tartan Army into ecstasy.

And it was Thomas Muller again who put Germany back in the lead with a goal from a corner which Scotland should have cleared before the Bayern Munich man put away a messy effort.

Charlie Mulgrew was perhaps harshly given a second yellow card late on which was a further dampener after a superb determined display from Strachan’s men.
